Icing on the Lake – Erie, PA – Fat Guy reviewer: Scott

We tend to be a tad meat-centric here on FGA, but we definitely love our baked goods as well; with Lunch dessert being the most important dessert of the day.

If you have not been by the West Erie Plaza lately, there is a lot going on.  It is in the midst of a major renovation and they are really trying to make it a shopping destination in Erie once again.  Among the newly opened tenants is Icing on the Lake.  They were previously located on West 12th Street near the airport.  I had their baked goods before, and was very impressed by them.  Though I have only visited them a couple times at the new location, everything has been superb.  Their website:

For this review I decided to focus on their cupcakes.  They have different ones available throughout the week, which is posted on their menu board online and in store.  I have sampled most of them by this point but need to visit more to try all of them.  Challenge accepted!

A quick shot of the cupcake case. Excuse the reflections, but it was impossible to get a good shot of this.
Cupcakes labelled. For Science. Don’t eat the text labels, though.

No need to do bore you with full tasting notes for each one (though, we are fancy here).  I’ll hit the highlights.  All of the cupcakes were nice and moist with a generous amount of frosting.  The red velvet and carrot cake were both good; a solid mini-me of their full-size counterparts.  I did not know what to expect from the topping on the hot chocolate cupcake.  Turned out it was a light whipped cream.   A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.  The bee’s knees was my least favorite.  It had a light sweetness and overall honey flavor.  Still good in its own right, but if I had it to do over again I would choose a different one to round out the box (perhaps caramel latte or peanut butter cup).

My hands down favorite is the salted caramel.  A hefty buttercream frosting with a bit of salt sprinkled on it.  In the cupcake itself there is a good size deposit of liquid caramel filling that sits just under the frosting.  Seriously one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

Icing on the lake has a range of baked goods available, though I have not yet sampled all of them.  I have had the cake pops, macaroons, cookies, and cupcakes (of course).  All have been very good.

If you are out their way (and even if you are not) stop on by Icing on the Lake.  It is most definitely Fat Guy Approved.
